What I was missing 22-across is that, in the wild, oxygen exists as molecules, O2 (the ‘2’ should be subscript) and that this is an ‘O’ formation.

12a was my clue of the week. I got the answer quickly, but puzzled over the wordplay for many a night. Working it out was well and truly a eureka moment. I don’t think I’ve seen this device before.
22a and 3d had nice definitions. I also liked “access point” in 8d.
