The Stickler Weekly 55 Solution

I’ve talked a number of times about the difficulty of a crossword, and how each part – the grid design, word choice and clues – contributes to the overall difficulty of the end result. It’s important to realise that a setter has total control over all these areas, so if a clue or crossword is generally difficult to solve, it’s because the setter wants it that way. Some words may provide only a few clueing options, none of them easy to unravel, but normally there’s an easyish option, and of course, the setter could rejig the grid to eliminate any troublesome words if they wanted to. It all depends on the objective of the setter and their attitude towards their solvers – it’s not hard to make a crossword that only a few can solve without aids – but what’s the point?
That’s not to say that a crossword doesn’t generally end up easier or harder than intended as clue assessment by a setter isn’t always right, as I’ve mentioned in previous cryptic comments. You can see how I view each clue by the clue help supplied – if there’s anything more than the type of clue, then I think extra help may be needed; if there’s nothing at all then I think it’s pretty straightforward. Many times solvers have requested clue help beyond what I’ve supplied, indicating that I’m not always on the mark.

A question mark has been used to indicate "language abuse", that is, a word or words in a clue are used in a technically incorrect way, but the meaning can be still inferred.

Example: A indeed (?) could mean to insert A inside deed.

A type of clue that involves the mixing up of letters without the inclusion of a letter or letters. This clue will have an anagram indicator to signify jumbling and a subtraction indicator to signify the removal of a letter or letters.

A removed letter may be as seen in the clue, an abbreviation for a word in the clue, or the result of another cryptic device like taking the initial letter from a word. Removed letters may be a whole word as seen in a clue, the synonym of a word in the clue (if that synonym is contiguous within the anagram fodder), or the result of another cryptic device like taking the middle two letters from a word.

A type of clue where the WHOLE clue defines the answer, and the WHOLE clue also is the wordplay (a mechanism to derive the answer through various cryptic devices). "&lit" is short for "and literally".

To qualify as an &lit, a clue must have no unused components either in the definition or the wordplay - it must be readable one way as a definition, and another as the wordplay.

The Stickler Weekly 54 Solution

It’s often said that the job of a setter is to entertain solvers, provide them with a diversion that evokes a sense of pleasure during and after solving. For some solvers, entertainment is all that matters, that is, it doesn’t matter necessarily how good the clues are as long as they have a sense of fun about them, use interesting techniques, and touch on things that solvers can relate to. The emphasis is on the big picture, not the detail, and the odd superfluous word, dodgy definition, or wrong tense, doesn’t interfere with their fun. They probably want to know how the wordplay works to add to their enjoyment, and this isn’t quelled even if the wordplay is faulty. Clues with humour or that are slightly risque raise a wry smile, and popular references make them feel up-to-date. Difficult crosswords that can’t be finished will probably elicit a negative response, as the entertainment factor has to extend right across the crossword. These solvers will solve any crossword that provides what they need but rarely compare the crosswords or setters at a technical level because that’s not what’s important to them.
I think there are setters out there who aim to entertain with every clue. I don’t think it’s possible without compromise, so I resist the urge to force something to happen, and settle for consistent, sound clues, which I hope, for most, provides entertainment enough.
